When the Clyde Ran Red



On Friday 21st October, Scottish author Maggie Craig launched the latest addition to her canon at Waterstone's bookstore in Glasgow. When the Clyde Ran Red is the story of Clydeside during the 'heady days when revolution was in the air'. From 1911 and the strike at the Singer sewing machine plant to the 1930s and the Spanish Civil War, Maggie addresses the political, economic and social activity of this area of the West of Scotland.

On its cover, it states the book is: 'celebrating the determination, achievements and sheer lust for life of the people of Glasgow, Clydebank and Clydeside'. Introduced by her father to the tales of Red Clydeside, for Maggie the seed of enthusiasm for her subject was sown at an early age. Add her meticulous research, and When the Clyde Ran Red is the result.

At the end of the Preface, Maggie says: 'Enter, stage left, the Red Clydesiders'. They will be a fascinating group of people to meet.

    I've already started Maggie's book and it certainly lives up to expectations - many fascinating nuggets of information about Red Clydeside.
